Using ready-made graphics can speed up your apparel business, but only if you have the right to sell products with them. Understanding licences protects your shop and your reputation.
1. Personal use vs commercial use
Personal use licences usually allow you to use a graphic for yourself, not to sell products. Commercial licences allow use in products or projects you sell, often with conditions.
2. Check for merchandise or print-on-demand rights
Some commercial licences cover marketing materials but not physical products for resale. If you plan to sell t-shirts, look for explicit permission for merchandise, print on demand or products for resale.
3. Look for limits
- Maximum number of units or sales
- Whether the graphic can be used in a logo or trademark
- Whether you must modify the design
- Restrictions on reselling the file itself
4. Red flags to avoid
- Graphics featuring famous characters, brand logos or celebrity likenesses
- Song lyrics, film quotes or sports team marks
- Sites with no clear licence terms
- “Free” graphics copied from elsewhere
5. Make the design your own
Even with a licence, customising graphics with your own text, colours and layout makes your products more unique. Our Vintage Apparel Graphic Set, Minimal Line-Art T-Shirt Design and Streetwear Print Collection are fully editable.
6. Keep records
Save a copy of the licence terms, your receipt or subscription record and the date you downloaded each file.
7. Read our licence
